On June 1, 2023, at 10:38 p.m., law enforcement officers were dispatched to the vicinity of the 100 block of North Center Street in response to a report of possible child abuse. Upon arrival, officers were informed that an area resident had witnessed an alarming incident involving Harmon, who was seen throwing her 5-month-old baby boy into an infant carrier and subsequently shaking the carrier in a violent manner, causing the infant’s head to impact the carrier repeatedly. The concerned neighbor attempted to intervene, but Harmon responded angrily and insisted that she leave the scene. Harmon then fled in a vehicle with the infant.

While conducting a search for the vehicle, officers located the GMC Yukon driven by Harmon and initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of West Jefferson Street and Catherine Street. They confirmed Harmon as the driver and found the infant in an infant carrier in the back seat.

During interactions with officers, Harmon displayed signs of potential alcohol impairment. Additionally, it was discovered that Harmon had consumed cannabis earlier in the day. Harmon underwent field sobriety tests and was taken into custody without any resistance. Her vehicle was subsequently towed from the location.

The officers took protective custody of Harmon’s child and observed visible injuries to the child’s head and back. The child was then transported to Ascension St. Joseph Medical Center by the Joliet Fire Department. The Department of Child and Family Services was notified, and they assumed responsibility for the child’s care and welfare.
